Word Online does not have "Track changes" and is therefore not suitable for teachers who correct language and style in longer texts. Just using balloons/comments is not enough. When starting a new assignment (hand-in), there should be an option to tick off to disable Word Online so the student will have to use the full version of Word. When the teacher returns the file with comments and corrections, the student sees these. When a teacher has used Track changes and the student opens the Wordfile in Word Online, the teacher corrections and comments are not visible. The process of having to explain to the students to download the file, click on "Track changes" and click on "All markup" is cumbersome and time-consuming. Therefore: make it possible to avoid the option of using Word Online.
